How Do I Determine Which Switch Is the CSS Master?

How Do I Determine Which Switch Is the CSS Master?

You can determine which switch is the CSS master by observing indicators or running commands.
  • By indicators

    • CSS card clustering: If the MASTER indicator on a CSS card is steady green, the MPU with the CSS card installed is the CSS master MPU, and this switch is the CSS master.
    • Service port clustering: If the ACT indicator on an MPU is steady green, the MPU is the CSS master MPU, and this switch is the CSS master.
  • By commands

You can run the display device or display css status command to view the master switch.

    • If the display device command output contains information such as Chassis 1 (Master Switch), this switch is the CSS master.
    • In the display css status command output, the CSS status field indicates the switch role.
