Application Scenarios for MLD

Application Scenarios for MLD

MLD runs between member hosts and directly connected multicast routers to manage and maintain multicast group memberships. To forward multicast data from multicast sources to receivers, multicast routers must run IPv6 Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) to set up forwarding paths. Figure 3-13 illustrates a typical MLD network topology.

The following solutions can be used in MLD applications.

Hosts dynamically join multicast groups through ASM.

Enable MLDv1 or MLDv2.

Enable MLDv1 or MLDv2.

Enable IPv6 PIM-DM or IPv6 PIM-SM.

Hosts dynamically join multicast groups through SSM.

Enable MLDv2.

Enable MLDv2.

Enable IPv6 PIM-SM.

Hosts dynamically join multicast groups through SSM mapping.

Enable MLDv1.

Enable MLDv2, enable MLD SSM mapping, and configure source-group mapping.

Enable IPv6 PIM-SM.
