Overview of Layer 3 Multicast CAC

Definition

Layer 3 multicast Call Admission Control (CAC) controls learning of Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) routing entries based on configured rules to limit the number of all multicast groups or the number of multicast groups within a channel.

A channel (an IP TV channel) contains multiple multicast groups (programs).

Purpose

With the increasing popularity of IPTV, the number of channels is increasing fast. When users request too many programs, multicast aggregation devices are overloaded, and therefore user experience degrades.

Layer 3 multicast CAC addresses this problem by implementing access control on Layer 3 multicast aggregation devices and rejecting user requests for new programs when the network bandwidth is insufficient. The purpose of Layer 3 multicast CAC is to ensure service quality for most of users by sacrificing the satisfaction of a few users.
