Setting a Convergence Priority for OSPF Routes


A network may bear many different services, such as data, voice, and video. These services have different requirements for the network. For Video on Demand (VoD) services, the route convergence speed of a multicast source server affects multicast services most. As such, the routes to the multicast source must converge fast if network faults occur. On a BGP or MPLS VPN bearer network where OSPF is used to implement IP connectivity of the backbone network, end-to-end routes between PEs must converge fast.

To ensure that OSPF routes converge preferentially, you can configure convergency priorities for these routes. This shortens the interruption of key services and improves the reliability of the entire network.


  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run ospf [ process-id ]

    The OSPF view is displayed.

  3. Run prefix-priority { critical | high | medium } ip-prefix ip-prefix-name

    A convergence priority is set for OSPF routes.

    OSPF then calculates and floods LSAs and synchronizes LSDBs according to the priority. This speeds up route convergence. When an LSA meets multiple priorities, the highest priority takes effect. OSPF calculates routes in the sequence of intra-area routes, inter-area routes, and AS external routes. This command specifies the OSPF route convergence priorities. Convergence priorities include critical, high, medium, and low in descending order. During LSA flooding, LSAs are placed into the corresponding critical, high, medium, and low queues according to priorities, which speeds up the processing of high-priority LSAs.


    This command takes effect only on the public network.
