Creating an OSPF Area

Creating an OSPF Area

Each device on an OSPF network must maintain an LSDB. The size of the LSDB increases as more devices are deployed on the network, which can become a burden. OSPF solves this problem by partitioning an AS into areas. An area is a logical device group identified by an area ID. The borders of an area are devices rather than links. Each OSPF interface must belong to an area, meaning that a link (or network segment) belongs to only one area.

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run ospf [ process-id | router-id router-id | vpn-instance vpn-instance-name ] *

An OSPF process is created, and the OSPF view is displayed.

  3. Run area area-id

An OSPF area is created, and the OSPF area view is displayed.

The area with ID 0 is the backbone area, which is responsible for forwarding inter-area routing information. Routing information between non-backbone areas must be forwarded through the backbone area.
