(Optional) Enabling Passive ARP

Context

When passive ARP is enabled and the backup device in a VRRP group receives ARP Request packets destined for the virtual IP address, the backup device does not learn ARP entries. When a link or device fault causes a VRRP active/standby switchover, the backup device switches to the master device to transmit service traffic. The new master needs to learn user-side entries before forwarding service traffic, causing a short service interruption. Passive ARP can address this issue.

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run arp learning passive enable

    Passive ARP is enabled.

    By default, passive ARP is disabled.

    When passive ARP is enabled and the backup device in a VRRP group receives ARP Request packets destined for the virtual IP address, the backup device learns ARP entries. Even if the VRRP active/standby switchover is performed, the new master device does not need to learn ARP entries. The new master device can rapidly forward service traffic, ensuring traffic continuity.
