Configuring 802.1ag MAC Ping

Context

Similar to IP ping, 802.1ag MAC ping monitors connectivity of a path between a MEP and an RMEP.

802.1ag MAC ping can be only implemented on the network where the MD, MA, and MEP are configured.

Procedure

  1. A device is usually configured with multiple MDs and MAs. To accurately detect connectivity of a link between two or more devices, perform either of the following operations.

    • MA view:

      1. Run system-view

        The system view is displayed.

      2. Run cfm md md-name

        The MD view is displayed.

      3. Run ma ma-name

        The MA view is displayed.

      4. Run ping mac-8021ag mep mep-id mep-id { md md-name ma ma-name { mac mac-address | remote-mep mep-id mep-id } | mac mac-address | remote-mep mep-id mep-id } [ -c count | interface interface-type interface-number | -s packetsize | -t timeout | -p priority-value ] *

        Connectivity between a MEP and an RMEP or a MIP is monitored.

      • The ping mac-8021ag command without md md-name and ma ma-name specified checks connectivity of links in a specified MA.

      • The ping mac-8021ag command with md md-name and ma ma-name specified checks connectivity of links based on the configured MA and MD.

    • All views except the MA view:

      Run ping mac-8021ag mep mep-id mep-id md md-name ma ma-name { mac mac-address | remote-mep mep-id mep-id } [ -c count | interface interface-type interface-number | -s packetsize | -t timeout | -p priority-value ] *

      Connectivity between a MEP and an RMEP or a MIP is monitored.

    When performing 802.1ag MAC ping, ensure that:

    • The MA has been associated with a VLAN.

    • The MEP has been configured in the MA.

    • The outbound interface (if specified) cannot be the interface on which an inward-facing MEP is configured. The interface must join the VLAN associated with the MA.

    • If the destination node is an RMEP, either mac mac-address or remote-mep mep-id mep-id can be specified. If remote-mep mep-id mep-id is specified, the RMEP must have been created using the remote-mep command and the bridge MAC address of the device on which the RMEP is located must be specified.

    • If the destination node is a MIP, specify mac mac-address.

    An intermediate device on a link is only used to forward LBMs and LBR messages; therefore, the intermediate device does not need to be configured with the MD, MA, or MEP.
