Displaying the Fan Status

Displaying the Fan Status

Context

Fans must operate normally to dissipate heat within the device. If the device becomes too hot, damage to the hardware may occur. You can use the following command to view the fan status and check whether fans are operating normally.

Procedure

  • Run the display fan command to view the fan status.

FAQ

Why Can I Not Obtain Fan Information?

On a device that uses natural heat dissipation and has no fan module or built-in fan, the display fan command returns no fan information.

Info: There is no fan.

How Can I Adjust the Fan Speed?

You are advised to use intelligent fan speed adjustment. Do not manually change the fan speed; otherwise, loud fan noises are generated and low fan speed may cause device faults. If you must change the fan speed, contact Huawei technical support.

Intelligent Fan Speed Adjustment

Whether switches have fans depends on device models. Some devices have fan subcards, some devices have built-in fans, and some devices do not have fans and use natural heat dissipation.

Devices that have fan subcards or built-in fans use the intelligent fan speed adjustment policy by default. That is, fans automatically adjust the fan speed based on the current device temperature.

Reason Why a Fan Does Not Rotate and Solution
If a fan of a device does not rotate, the following situations may have occurred:
  • Fan blades are blocked: Clean the fan blades.
  • The fan is not installed properly: Ensure that the fan is connected securely.
  • The fan has a hardware fault. If other fans are rotating or a new fan can rotate after being installed, the fan experiences a hardware fault and needs to be replaced.
How to Increase the Fan Speed
  • (Recommended) Run the set fan speed-adjust threshold minus command to set the temperature thresholds for fan speed adjustment so that you can increase the fan speed.
  • (Used with caution) Run the temperature threshold command to set the temperature alarm threshold Upper(C) to be smaller than the current device temperature Current(C). Subsequently, fans rotate at full speed.
    NOTE:

This configuration enables fans to rotate at full speed, and so may generate loud fan noises and a high temperature alarm. Therefore, you are advised to use this command under the instruction of technical support personnel.

How Can I View Built-in Fan Information?

To view information about built-in fans, run the display fan command. A device has no fan subcard but has built-in fans if both of the following situations occur:
  • No fan information is displayed when you run the display device command.
  • The Online field displays Present when you run the display fan command.
The following is an example of the command output.
