Restoring Data Using a Backup Image

Restoring Data Using a Backup Image

This operation allows you to restore data from a backup image to a LUN or LUN consistency group.

Prerequisites

A backup image has been generated in the system.

Context

  • In the event of data loss or corruption in a LUN or LUN consistency group of the production system, you can use the backup image at the specified point in time to restore the data.
  • During restoration, CloudBackup will check the integrity of the backup image's data blocks, but will not verify the data in the backup image.
  • Restoration tasks are queued up after creation and executed in sequential order.

Precautions

  • Ensure that data in the backup image is not modified.
  • When restoring data to a source LUN consistency group, ensure that the WWNs of the consistency group and its member LUNs, as well as the number of member LUNs in the consistency group, are the same as those when backup was performed.
  • Before restoration, suspend host I/Os to the target LUN or LUN consistency group.
NOTE:

If the target LUN has been mounted, unmount it before restoration. After data restoration is complete, mount it again.

  • During restoration, ensure that the value-added features on the host or storage system do not perform read or write operations on the target LUN or LUN consistency group.
  • After data restoration is complete, you must rebuild the connection between the target LUN and the host in either of the following scenarios. This allows the host to identify the correct partition information or capacity information of the target LUN.
    • The source LUN for which the backup image was generated has different capacity or partitions from the target LUN of the restoration.
    • The host uses the target LUN as a raw disk.

Procedure

  1. Choose Data Protection > CloudBackup > Backup and Restoration > Backup Image and Restoration.
  2. Select the desired backup image and click Restore.

The Restore Backup Image dialog box is displayed.

Ensure that data in the backup image is not modified.

  3. Select the target of restoration. You can restore the data to either the source LUN or LUN consistency group of the backup image or another existing LUN or LUN consistency group.

Perform either of the following operations:

    • Select Source LUN or Source LUN Consistency Group.
    • Select Existing LUN or Existing LUN Consistency Group and then choose a target LUN or LUN consistency group from the list.
    NOTE:
    • If the protected object of the backup image is a LUN and the backup image is restored to another existing LUN, the capacity of the target LUN must be greater than or equal to that of the source LUN.
    • If the protected object of a backup image is a LUN consistency group and the backup image is restored to another existing LUN consistency group, you must manually specify a source LUN in the source consistency group for each target LUN in the target consistency group, and ensure that the target LUN has a capacity greater than or equal to that of the source LUN.
    • You can enter the name of a LUN or LUN consistency group in Name in the upper right corner and click Search to search for the desired LUN or LUN consistency group.

  4. Click OK.

The Danger dialog box is displayed.

  5. Confirm the information in the dialog box and select I have read and understand the consequences associated with performing this operation. Then click OK.

The Execution Result dialog box is displayed. You can choose Data Protection > CloudBackup > Task Monitoring to query the task progress.

  6. Click Close.
