This section describes the background, definition, and benefits of CloudBackup.


Data backup is crucial in protecting data from losses or corruption caused by human factors or physical faults in storage systems. The popularity of cloud promotes an increasing number of enterprises to back up data to object storage on the cloud, which reduces the procurement and maintenance costs of backup storage and achieves high cost-effectiveness and reliability.


Huawei's CloudBackup is able to back up LUNs or LUN consistency groups from a storage system to either another storage system in an on-premises data center or the object storage on the cloud. In the event of data loss or corruption in these LUNs or LUN consistency groups, CloudBackup can use the backup images to restore the data to the state at the specified point in time.


CloudBackup provides the following benefits:

  • Backup of individual LUNs or LUN consistency groups

    When you back up a LUN consistency group, all LUNs in the consistency group are backed up simultaneously.

  • Reduced procurement and maintenance costs

    You do not need to purchase a backup server. Data can be backed up to the NAS device in an on-premises data center or to the object storage on the cloud.

  • Backup data compression

    If the backup bandwidth is limited (especially when you back up data to the cloud), data can be compressed before transmission and storage, improving efficiency and resource utilization.

  • Offline backup

    If the backup bandwidth is limited (especially when you back up data to the cloud), the initial full backup can be performed offline, which saves the backup time.

  • Resumable data transfer

    If a network failure causes the backup to be interrupted, the backup will resume from a breakpoint if the network recovers within 24 hours.

  • Periodic full backup

    The periodic backup schedules support both incremental and full backups. If an incremental backup image is damaged, which results in the failure of its subsequent incremental backup images, you can use the latest full backup image for data recovery.

  • WAN acceleration

    WAN acceleration is supported for better transmission performance.
