Creating a Clone for a Single Parent File System

Cloning a single parent file system will quickly generate one or multiple copies of the parent file system at the snapshot point in time.


A file system exists in the storage system and is running properly.


  • The creation of a clone file system has no impact on the parent file system.
  • The created clone file system and parent file system belong to the same controller.
  • The created clone file system and parent file system belong to the same storage pool.
  • You can create clones for existing clone file systems. A maximum of eight levels of clone file systems can be created.
  • A clone cannot be created for a clone file system that is being split.
  • A clone cannot be created for a WORM file system.


  1. Go to the user interface of clone file systems in vStore.

    The operation path varies with user types:

    • System user: Click vStore, select the desired vStore, and click Details to go to the vStore view. Choose Data Protection > Clone.
    • vStore user: In the vStore view, choose Data Protection > Clone.

  2. In the left file system tree, select a parent file system for which you want to create a clone and click Create.


    The file system directory tree contains parent file system and their associated clone file systems. You can click All to expand or collapse the file system tree.

    The Create Clone File System dialog box is displayed. The default mode is Select a single parent file system.

  3. Set parameters of the clone file system.

    Table 3-1 describes related parameters.

    Name of the clone file system.

    [Value range]

    • The name must be unique.
    • The name contains only letters, digits, and underscores (_).
    • The name contains 1 to 255 characters.




    Description of the clone file system.

    [Value range]

    The description contains 0 to 255 characters.



    Snapshot Type

    Snapshot used to create the clone file system. You can create a snapshot or use an existing snapshot to create a clone file system. If you use existing snapshots, you can create multiple clone file systems in a batch.

    • New snapshot. The storage system will automatically generate a snapshot at the current point in time.
    • Select existing snapshots. The system uses existing snapshots, including common snapshots, timing snapshots, and HyperReplication/NAS HyperMetro/HyperVault private snapshots. You can specify the Quantity of clone file systems that will be created using the selected snapshot.

    Using an existing snapshot to create a clone file system will not change the data of this snapshot.

  4. Click OK.

    The Execution Result dialog box is displayed, indicating that the operation is successful.

  5. Click Close.

Follow-up Procedure

After the clone file system is created, you can share it with application servers, and check whether data under the shared directory of the clone file system is consistent with the parent file system.
