This section describes the background, definition, and benefits of HyperClone for file.


In file system applications, users need to use duplicates of production data for testing, data analysis, and disaster recovery tests without affecting production data. To meet user requirements, Huawei has developed the HyperClone feature, which provides LUN clone and file system clone functions. File system clone meets the requirements for quick copy and deployment and protects data.


HyperClone for file is a data protection technology that duplicates the source file system based on snapshots. Similar to a file system snapshot, a clone file system shares source data with the source file system. Multiple available copies at a point in time can be created instantly. A clone file system is different from read-only snapshots as it can be read and written by application servers. By splitting a clone file system, an independent and complete physical data duplicate can be obtained.


  • Rapid deployment

    A clone file system can be created instantly as it shares source data with the parent file system.

  • Space saving

    File system clone saves a large number of resources because a clone file system only saves the part of data that has changed from the source data. Extra storage space will be occupied only after data changes occur.

  • Reliable service continuity

    Clone is performed online without interrupting services, achieving zero backup window.

  • Effective performance assurance

    Multiple copies of the same source file system can be generated and then independently used for application testing and data analysis. The read/write performance of the source file system will not be affected.

  • Stable data consistency

    Copies of different source file systems can be generated simultaneously to maintain point-in-time consistency between these data copies. This protects the association among copies of different source data in applications such as a database.
