Replacing a Service Disk Module

As storage media, service disk modules are hot-swappable.

Impact on the System

During the interval between removing a service disk module and installing the replacement service disk module, system performance is compromised. Therefore, replace a service disk module during off-peak hours.


  • A new service disk module with the same type as those of the faulty disk module has been prepared. The capacity of the replacement disk module is equal to or larger than that of the faulty disk module.
  • The faulty service disk module has been located. Figure 4-1 and Figure 4-2 show the service disk module slot number.

  • To prevent damaging the disk module or connectors, remove or install the disk module with even force.
  • When removing the disk module, remove it from the port, wait 30 seconds, and remove the service disk module completely from the enclosure.
  • To prevent disk module damage, wait at least 1 minute after removal and before reinserting a disk module, or after insertion and before removing a disk module.
  • To avoid data loss, you only need to replace the disk modules whose Fault indicators are red on.
  • To avoid system failures, do not reuse disks.
  • Solid state disks (SSDs) and hard disk drives (HDDs for short, including NL-SAS, SAS, SATA disks) cannot be preserved long after being powered off.
    • SSDs with no data stored can be preserved for a maximum of twelve months while they are powered off. SSDs with data stored can be preserved for a maximum of three months while they are powered off. If the maximum preservation time is exceeded, data loss or SSD failure may occur.
    • Packed HDDs can be preserved for a maximum of six months. Unpacked HDDs that are powered off can also be preserved for a maximum of six months. If the maximum preservation time is exceeded, data loss or disk failure may occur.
    • The maximum preservation time is determined based on the disk preservation specifications provided by the HDD vendor. For details, see the manual provided by the vendor.
  • You can replace a faulty large-capacity SSD with a small-capacity SSD only in slot 0. In other conditions, do not replace a faulty large-capacity disk with a small-capacity disk of the same type. Otherwise, the system will prevent the disk from running.

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
  2. Remove the disk module.
    1. Push the spring that secures the disk ejector lever, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-3.

      The ejector lever automatically ejects.

    2. Hold the ejector lever, and pull the disk module out by approximately 3 cm, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-3.
    3. Wait at least 30 seconds until the disk module stops and then slowly pull it out, as shown in step 3 in Figure 4-3.
  3. Put the removed disk module in an ESD bag.
  4. Take the replacement disk module out of its ESD bag.
  5. Install the disk module.
    1. Raise the ejector lever and push the disk module in along the guide rails until it does not move, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-4.

    2. Ensure that the ejector lever is fastened to the beam, and lower the ejector lever to completely insert the disk into the slot, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-4.
  6. Wait 3 minutes and then check the Fault and Active indicators on the disk module to determine whether the disk module is successfully installed.

    • If the Active indicator is steady on or blinking green, and the disk module Fault indicator is off, the installation is successful.
    • Possible causes as to why the disk module Fault indicator is steady yellow are:
      • The disk module has not been firmly inserted. Wait 1 minute and then reinsert it.
      • If the disk module Fault indicator is still steady yellow after you have reinserted the disk module, the replacement disk module may be faulty. Replace it with another one.
      • If the Fault indicator is still steady yellow after the replacement, the link of the disk slot may be broken. In this case, contact technical support.

  7. Check and upgrade the disk firmware.
    1. Log in to the command-line interface (CLI). For details, see Logging In to the CLI in OceanStor 9000 V5 Command Reference.
    2. Run show disk general to check whether the firmware of the replaced disk needs to be upgraded. If any record shows that the value of DiskNeedUpg is YES, the firmware needs upgrade.

      • If yes, record nodeID and location in the command output where the value of DiskNeedUpg is YES.
      • If no, the disk firmware does not need to be upgraded.

    3. Log in to DeviceManager. On the lower right at the home page, click Task Management and check whether any data reconstruction tasks are incomplete.

      • If yes, check the data reconstruction progress and wait until the data reconstruction tasks are complete.
      • If no, go to 7.d.

    4. On the CLI, run upgrade disk node_id slot_id to upgrade the disk firmware.

      node_id and slot_id are the values of nodeID and location recorded in 7.b. The upgrade costs approximately 3 minutes. Once the upgrade is complete, a data reconstruction task is generated automatically. If you are going to upgrade other disks, wait until this data reconstruction task is complete.

    5. Repeat 7.a to 7.d to upgrade all disk firmware that needs to be upgraded.
  8. Inspect the system using SmartKit. Choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > More > Inspection to check the system status. For details, see the OceanStor 9000 V5 Routine Maintenance.

    • If all inspection items are successful: The inspection is successful.
    • If some inspection items fail the inspection: The inspection is failed. Rectify the faults by taking recommended actions in the inspection reports. You need to reperform inspection after rectifying. If the inspection is still failed, contact Huawei technical support.

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the service disk module, label the replaced disk module to facilitate subsequent operations.
