Replacing an Internal Cable

Impact on the System

  • Before replacing an internal cable, you must power off the P36E or C36E node. This will adversely affect the services running on the node. Exercise caution when performing this operation.


  • The replacement internal cable is ready.
  • The faulty internal cable has been located.
  • You have recorded the cable mapping of the device, securely stopped the services, executed a shut-down command in the operating system to power off the P36E or C36E node, and disconnected the node from power sockets and peripheral devices.

Tools and Materials

  • Flat-head screwdrivers
  • Phillips screwdrivers
  • ESD gloves
  • ESD wrist straps
  • ESD bags
  • Labels


  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
  2. Use the KVM to log in to the operating system of the node, enter user name root and its password (default: Root@storage), and run poweroff command to power off the node.

    Wait until the KVM has no output. The power-off is complete.

  3. Remove all power cables and external signal cables.
  4. Remove the storage node from the cabinet.
    1. Loosen the captive screws on the panel using a Phillips screwdriver, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-21.

    2. Slowly pull the storage node out along the guide rails, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-21.
    3. Press the release buttons on both sides and pull the storage node out of the cabinet along the guide rails, as shown in step 3 in Figure 4-21.
  5. Remove the enclosure cover.
    1. Use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the latch that secures the ejector lever of the enclosure cover, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-22.
    2. Open the ejector lever to push the enclosure cover backward, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-22.

  6. Lift the air duct, as shown in Figure 4-23.

  7. Vertically lift a fan module until it is disconnected from the mainboard. See Figure 4-24. Use the same method to remove the other fan modules.

  8. Press and hold down the latches on both sides of a fan module bracket, and lift the fan support. Use the same method to lift the other fan module bracket. See Figure 4-25.

  9. Determine whether to remove the mainboard frame before removing the cable.
    • If yes, go to 10.
    • If no, go to 14.
  10. Remove all cables connected to the mainboard.

    Remove the FFC cable to avoid cable damage caused by the removal of the mainboard frame. See step (1) in Figure 4-26. If the FFC cable is damaged, the server cannot work.

  11. Loosen the screws that secure the mainboard to the chassis. See step (2) in Figure 4-26.
  12. Push the mainboard frame out of the chassis by holding the mainboard handle. See step (3) in Figure 4-26.
  13. Press the release spring and pull the mainboard out of the chassis completely. See Figure 4-27.

  14. Remove the cable to be removed.
  15. Place the removed cable in an ESD bag.
  16. Take a spare cable out of the ESD bag.
  17. Connect one end of the spare cable to the hard disk backplane.
  18. Determine whether to install the mainboard frame.
    • If yes, go to 19.
    • If no, go to 21.
  19. Press and hold down the release spring and push the mainboard frame in the arrow direction until it cannot move forward. See Figure 4-28.

  20. Tighten the screws that secure the mainboard to the chassis. See Figure 4-29.

  21. Connect cables to the mainboard.
  22. Install fan module brackets in the chassis. See Figure 4-30.

  23. Insert fan modules into the slots and ensure that fan module cable connectors fit into the ports on the mainboard. See Figure 4-31.

  24. Align the positioning pins on the air duct with the fixing holes on the mainboard, and vertically place the air duct downwards, as shown in Figure 4-32.

  25. Install the enclosure cover.
    1. Place the enclosure cover horizontally, align it with the fixing slots on both side panels of the enclosure, and close the ejector lever, as shown in steps 1 and 2 in Figure 4-33.

    2. Tighten the latch to secure the ejector lever of the enclosure cover using flat-head screwdriver, as shown in step 3 in Figure 4-33.
  26. Put the storage node into the cabinet.
    1. Arrange at least four persons to lift the storage node on both sides, align the inner rails on the storage node with the holding rails, and push the storage node into the cabinet along the holding rails, as shown in Figure 4-34.

    2. Press the release buttons on both sides, and push the storage node into the cabinet until the storage node cannot move forward, as shown in Figure 4-35.

    3. Tighten the two captive screws on the mounting ears to secure the storage node, as shown in Figure 4-36.

  27. Connect the storage node to the power sockets and peripheral devices according to the cable connection labels. Then power on the storage node.
  28. Inspect the system using SmartKit. Choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > More > Inspection to check the system status. For details, see the OceanStor 9000 V5 Routine Maintenance.

    • If all inspection items are successful: The inspection is successful.
    • If some inspection items fail the inspection: The inspection is failed. Rectify the faults by taking recommended actions in the inspection reports. You need to reperform inspection after rectifying. If the inspection is still failed, contact Huawei technical support.

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the cable, label the replaced cable to facilitate subsequent operations.
