Replacing a System Disk Assembly

A system disk assembly provides power and data transmission channels for disks.

Impact on the System

Before replacing a assembly, you must power off the storage node. This will adversely affect the services running on the node. Exercise caution when performing this operation.

Prerequisites

The replacement system disk assembly is ready.

Precaution

  • Only professional technical support engineers are allowed to replace a assembly.
  • A storage node has two power modules. Ensure that both are disconnected.
  • To prevent personal injury, arrange two persons to replace it.

Tools and Materials

  • Flat-head screwdrivers
  • Phillips screwdrivers
  • Electrostatic discharge (ESD) gloves
  • ESD wrist straps
  • ESD bags
  • Labels

Procedure

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
  2. Use the KVM to log in to the operating system of the node, enter user name root and its password (default: Root@storage), and run poweroff command to power off the node.

    Wait until the KVM has no output. The power-off is complete.

  3. Remove all power cables and external signal cables.
  4. Remove the storage node from the enclosure.
    1. Loosen the captive screws on the storage node panel using a screwdriver, as shown in step 1 in Figure 5-56.

    2. Pull out the storage node along the guide rails away from the cabinet, as shown in step 2 in Figure 5-56.
    3. Push the release button upward, and remove the storage node with the inner rails. See Figure 5-57. Note that four people are required to lift the storage node.

  5. Remove the enclosure cover.
    1. Use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the latch that secures the ejector lever of the enclosure cover, as shown in step 1 in Figure 5-58.
    2. Open the ejector lever to push the enclosure cover backwards, as shown in step 2 in Figure 5-58.

  6. Disconnect cables for the system disk assembly.
  7. Remove the disk module.
    1. Press the ejector release button on the drive, as shown in step 1 in Figure 5-59.

      The ejector lever automatically ejects.

    2. Hold the ejector lever, and pull the disk module out by approximately 3 cm, as shown in step 2 in Figure 5-59.
    3. Wait at least 30 seconds until the disk module stops and then slowly pull it out, as shown in step 3 in Figure 5-59.
  8. Loosen the screws on the drive assembly and lift the drive assembly to remove it, as shown in Figure 5-60.

  9. Put the removed system disk assembly into an ESD bag.
  10. Take the replacement system disk assembly out of its ESD bag.
  11. Install the system disk assembly in the enclosure and screw the assembly, as shown in Figure 5-61.

  12. Install the disk module.
    1. Raise the ejector lever and push the disk module in along the guide rails until it does not move, as shown in step 1 in Figure 5-62.

    2. Ensure that the ejector lever is fastened to the beam, and lower the ejector lever to completely insert the disk module into the slot, as shown in step 2 in Figure 5-62.
  13. Connect the cables for the system disk assembly.
  14. Install the enclosure cover.
    1. Place the enclosure cover horizontally, align it with the fixing slots on both side panels of the enclosure, and close the ejector lever, as shown in steps 1 and 2 in Figure 5-63.

    2. Use a flat-head screwdriver to tighten the latch in order to secure the ejector lever of the enclosure cover, as shown in step 3 in Figure 5-63.
  15. Put the storage node into the cabinet.
    1. Lift the storage node, align the inner rails with the holding rails, and push the storage node into the rack. See Figure 5-64. Note that four people are required to lift the storage node.

    2. Press the release buttons on both sides, and push the storage node into the cabinet until the storage node cannot move forward, as shown in Figure 5-65.

    3. Tighten the captive screws on the mounting ears to secure the storage node, as shown in Figure 5-66.

  16. Connect the storage node to the power sockets and peripheral devices according to the cable connection labels. Then power on the storage node.
  17. Check whether the assembly is successfully replaced.

    • If the disks are powered on properly and the disk indicators are steady on, the assembly is successfully replaced.
    • If the disk indicators are off, the assembly fails to be replaced. Install it again or contact technical support.

  18. Inspect the system using SmartKit. Choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > More > Inspection to check the system status. For details, see the OceanStor 9000 V5 Routine Maintenance.

    • If all inspection items are successful: The inspection is successful.
    • If some inspection items fail the inspection: The inspection is failed. Rectify the faults by taking recommended actions in the inspection reports. You need to reperform inspection after rectifying. If the inspection is still failed, contact Huawei technical support.

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the assembly, label the replaced assembly to facilitate subsequent operations.
