IP Address Design

The CIS or EMPS, EEM, and DCP are deployed on data center servers and each system can be deployed in active/standby or cluster mode. Each server needs to be configured with multiple network adapters, and each network adapter needs to be assigned an IP address. The systems need to exchange data, so there must be reachable routes between corresponding servers. For details about requirements for IP address design of the servers, see the parameter design of each system.

If remote disaster recovery is deployed, F5 load balancers of the production center and disaster recovery center are configured with different virtual IP addresses. Ensure that there are reachable routes between servers in a data center and between two data centers so that data can be backed up.

IP address design of servers in a data center should comply with the following principles:
  • Uniqueness

    Hosts on an IP network must use unique IP addresses. Allocate different IP addresses to hosts even they support MPLS VPN address overlapping.

  • Contiguousness

    The routes with contiguous addresses can be summarized easily on a hierarchical network. This reduces the routing table size and speeds up route calculation and route convergence.

  • Scalability

    IP addresses need to be reserved at each layer to ensure continuity of addresses when the network is expanded.

  • Meaningfulness

    If the IP addresses are planned properly, you can determine the device type and services from the IP addresses.
