Red Hat OpenStack Components

Red Hat OpenStack Platform is an enterprise-class cloud computing platform centered on the open-source OpenStack. Red Hat OpenStack supports distributed object storage, persistent block storage, VM and image management, user and permission management, SDN network, and web-based O&M and management. Figure 1-1 shows the main component services of Red Hat OpenStack Platform, which are described as follows:

  1. Dashboard service

    Provides a web-based UI for OpenStack service provisioning, management, and O&M. This service corresponds to the Horizon project in the OpenStack community.

  2. Identity service

    Provides authorization and authentication services for tenants, projects, and OpenStack components. This service corresponds to the Keystone project in the OpenStack community.

  3. OpenStack Networking service

    Provides basic network services, standard L2 and L3 network model abstraction (router, network, subnet, and port), and implementation framework (ML2 and L3 plug-in). This service corresponds to the Neutron project in the OpenStack community.

  4. Block Storage service

    Provides pooled persistent block storage. This service corresponds to the Cinder project in the OpenStack community.

  5. Compute service

    Provides pooled computing resources based on Red Hat KVM. This service corresponds to the Nova project in the OpenStack community.

  6. Image service

    Provides VM image management functions (such as backup and snapshot). This service corresponds to the Glance project in the OpenStack community.

  7. Object Storage service

    Provides object storage for files and videos. This service corresponds to the Swift project in the OpenStack community.

  8. Telemetry service

    Provides statistics on the CPU, RAM, and storage container, and other resources. This service corresponds to the Ceilometer project in the OpenStack community.

  9. Orchestration service

    Provides template-based service orchestration services and supports automatic provisioning of OpenStack services such as networks and VMs in batches. This service corresponds to the Heat project in the OpenStack community.
