Installation Precautions

Installation Precautions

This chapter lists installation precautions.

Understanding Disk Partitioning

Before both pre-installation and new installation, you must understand hardware requirements and disk partitioning plan to prevent installation failures or inappropriate log storage. For details, see Selecting a Deployment Mode.

Disk Mounting Description

For the first installation of a standalone collector with a disk array, you are advised to create the /opt/huawei/LogCenterData directory, mount the disk array space to this directory, and install the eLog collector. If you install the eLog collector first, you cannot mount the disk array space to the /opt/huawei/LogCenterData directory because the directory is not empty. In this case, you can mount the disk array according to the standalone collector scenario (first installation without disk arrays), in which you must plan disk space for storing online and dumped logs separately, but this installation mode is not recommended.

Time Synchronization

The system time must be the same on the eLog analyzer, eLog collector, and managed log sources (such as firewalls). Otherwise, the analyzer and collector cannot receive logs from the log sources.

The NTP service can be configured for time synchronization. For details, see Configuring the NTP Component.

Disk Array Configuration After Operating System Installation

You are advised to install the operating system before configuring the disk array because partitioning will be affected if the installation sequence is wrong and the installation of multi-path software requires an operating system. For the operating system installation procedure, see Installing the SUSE Linux Operating System.

As for hardware, you are advised to use servers delivered with the eLog. If other servers are used, the servers must meet the hardware configuration requirements. In addition, you need to purchase and install the SUSE Linux 12 SP2 (64-bit) (multilingual version) operating system for the servers.
