Installing the SUSE Linux 12 SP2 Operating System

If the server is delivered along with the eLog, install the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP2 operating system by following instructions in this section.


  • Please select operating system type according to the network.
    • autoInstall_zh: Installing operating system in Chinese automatically.
    • autoInstall_en: Installing operating system in English automatically.
    • Installation: Installing operating system manually. If you have to change the installation parameters, please select this type.

    You are recommended to select autoInstall type. This section will introduce the procedure of autoInstall_en as an example.

  • The operating system disk (a CD-ROM or an .iso file) has been obtained.

    Please use the Linux pre-installation CD-ROM marked on the label.


  1. Insert the operating system disk.

    Or use the iBMC to mount the .iso file according to Mounting Disks and Changing the Boot Sequence.

  2. Restart the server.
  3. When the following page is displayed, press to move the cursor to the automatic installation disk and press Enter.

  4. The installation page is displayed. The installation is automatic, and the server will be restarted during the installation.

  5. After the installation is complete, the system is automatically logged in.

Verifying the Installation

  1. When the login page is displayed after the installation is complete, log in to the server as the root user. The password is Changeme123.
  2. Right-click in a blank area on the desktop, and choose Open in Terminal from the displayed shortcut menu.

    The Terminal window is displayed.

  3. Run the following command to check the operating system version and the patch version.
    # cat /etc/SuSE-release

    If you enter SUSE or suse instead of SuSE in the preceding command, the system will return no response.

    SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12(x86_64)
    VERSION = 12

    The command output is described as follows:

    • If the command output contains (x86_64), the SUSE Linux 12 SP2 operating system is a 64-bit operating system.
    • If the command output contains VERSION = 12, the operating system version is correct.
    • If the command output contains PATCHLEVEL = 2, the patch version is correct.

      If the command output does not contain the preceding information, check the installation CD-ROM.

Follow-up Procedure

For the operating system installed using the pre-installation operating system disk, the time, time zone, user name, and password of the operating system are automatically set. If the time and time zone are inaccurate, adjust them according to Changing the Time and Time Zone of the Operating System. In addition, you are advised to change the password of the operating system user account according to (Optional) Changing the User Password of the Operating System for security.
