Hardware Cabling of the Disk Array

After the disk array is installed, connect the disk array to a server or another disk array with cables.

Connecting the Disk Array to a Server

Before connecting the disk array to a server, install an HBA card on the server. The HBA card provides FC ports connecting to optical fibers.

  • The IO performance will be affected if only one controller is connected.
  • Record the IDs of the FC ports on the HBA card of each server because the IDs are required when you select an initiator.
  • Record the IDs of the FC ports on the two controllers of a disk array because the IDs are required when you check the FC port connection status.

This diagram shows only the cables between the disk array and server. For other cables, see Checking Hardware Connections.

Cascaded Disk Array

If the disk space of one controller enclosure is insufficient, disk enclosures can be cascaded to the controller enclosure to expand the space of the disk array.

From top to bottom in the figure, the first one is a disk enclosure, the second one is a controller enclosure, and the third and fourth ones are disk enclosures.

  • The following figure shows how a controller enclosure connects to three disk enclosures.
  • If a controller enclosure connects to only one disk enclosure, refer to the relationship between the first disk enclosure and the second controller enclosure.
  • If a controller enclosure connects to two disk enclosures, refer to the relationship between the second controller enclosure and the third and fourth disk enclosures.

NOTE:
  • Each cascading cable must connect to an EXP port on one end and a PRI port on the other end.
  • After connecting a cascading cable, check whether the port indicator is steady on. If the indicator blinks or is off, the cable or module is faulty. Locate the fault according to the disk array product manual.
  • To remove a cascading cable, gently draw out the tab on the connector and then pull out the cable.
