Changing the Hostname/DNS and IP Address of the Operating System

This section describes how to change the hostname/DNS and IP address of the operating system.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the Linux operating system as user root.
  2. Right-click the desktop and choose Open in Terminal from the shortcut menu to access the CLI.
  3. Change the host name of the operating system.

    1. On the terminal, run the following command to open the host name configuration file.
      #vi /etc/HOSTNAME
    2. Press i to switch to the insert mode.
    3. Press Esc, enter :wq, and press Enter to save the configuration and exit from the vi editor.

  4. Change the host name and IP address of the network adapter.

    NOTE:
    1. On the CLI, run the following command. The Administrator Settings window is displayed.
      # yast2
    2. Choose System > Network Settings.

    3. Click the Hostname/DNS tab, change the host name or DNS server, and click OK.

    4. On the Overview tab, select the IP address to be changed and click Edit. The Network Card Setup dialog box is displayed.

    5. Click the Address tab, change the IP address, enter the host name, and click Next.
      NOTE:

      If any host name is changed (hostname of system, DNS or NICs), the other two must keep the same.

    6. Click OK.
    7. Click the Routing tab, change the default gateway, and click OK.

      NOTE:

      After configuring the default gateway on the Routing tab, run the ping command on the server to ping the default gateway. Ensure that the server and default gateway are reachable, so that the server can communicate with other devices.

  5. Restart the operating system to make the settings to take effect.
