Definition

1588, often referred to as Precision Time Protocol (PTP), is defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol for Networked Measurement and Control Systems.

1588 includes 1588v1 and 1588v2. 1588v1 provides time synchronization at the sub-millisecond level, while 1588v2 provides time synchronization at the sub-microsecond level. As a time synchronization protocol, 1588v2 initially applied to high-precision time synchronization between devices and now is also used for frequency synchronization.

1588v1 has been replaced by 1588v2. Unless otherwise stated, PTP described in this document refers to 1588v2.

Purpose

In data center networks, with the continuous development of hardware technologies, switches and servers require more accurate time to provide high time precision for services such as network delay measurement, O&M analysis, and distributed computing.

Clock frequency and phase synchronization requirements of network devices can be met by various technologies, including Global Positioning System (GPS), Network Time Protocol (NTP), and synchronous Ethernet. However, using GPS requires antennas to be installed in each device, increasing project implementation and maintenance costs. NTP can provide only time synchronization at the sub-second level and cannot meet time precision requirements of devices, and synchronous Ethernet can provide only frequency synchronization.

With the assistance of hardware, 1588v2 can provide time synchronization at the sub-microsecond level, reduce construction and maintenance costs, and allow time synchronization without the GPS.
