Protection Switching

When the clock source traced by a switch is lost, automatic protection switching (APS) enables the switch to automatically trace another clock source. The newly traced clock source may be the same reference clock as the previously traced one or may be another clock source with a lower SSM quality level. After the previously traced clock source recovers, the switch determines whether to select the clock source to trace again based on its configuration.

Protection Switching in Automatic Clock Source Selection Mode

  • In Figure 5-8, when the network is operating normally, based on the priorities and SSM quality levels of clock sources, devices decide to trace external clock 1 and determine the corresponding clock synchronization path according to the automatic clock source selection algorithm.

  • In Figure 5-9, when a link fails, devices retain the traced clock source and update only the clock synchronization path according to the automatic clock source selection algorithm.

  • In Figure 5-10, when a clock source fails, devices trace external clock 2 and update the clock synchronization path according to the automatic clock source selection algorithm.

  • In Figure 5-11, when the link or clock source recovers, devices trace external clock 1 again and update the clock synchronization path according to the automatic clock source selection algorithm.

Protection Switching in Manual Clock Source Selection Mode

  • When the manually specified clock source is working normally, devices trace it.
  • When the manually specified clock source fails, devices change to the automatic clock source selection mode and trace the new clock source and update the clock synchronization path according to the automatic clock source selection algorithm.
  • When the manually specified clock source recovers, devices determine whether to trace it again according to the automatic clock source selection algorithm.

Protection Switching in Forced Clock Source Selection Mode

  • When the forcibly specified clock source is working normally, devices trace it.
  • When the forcibly specified clock source fails, clocks of devices enter the holding state.
  • When the forcibly specified clock source recovers, devices trace it again.
