Enabling MLD Snooping Proxy

Enabling MLD Snooping Proxy

When MLD is not enabled on a Layer 3 device, for example, only static multicast groups are configured, there is no MLD querier on the network to maintain group membership. You can configure MLD snooping proxy on a Layer 2 device so that it can send Query messages to function as an MLD querier.

When MLD runs on the network, to reduce the number of MLD Report and Done messages sent to the upstream Layer 3 device, you can configure MLD snooping proxy on a Layer 2 device. The Layer 2 device then functions as a host to send MLD Report messages to the upstream Layer 3 device.

A device configured with MLD snooping proxy functions as a host for its upstream device and a querier for its downstream hosts.

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run vlan vlan-id

    The VLAN view is displayed.

  3. Run mld snooping proxy

    MLD snooping proxy is enabled.

By default, MLD snooping proxy is disabled.

    • If Layer 3 multicast functions (such as MLD or PIM IPv6) are enabled on a VLANIF interface, MLD snooping proxy cannot be enabled in the corresponding VLAN.

    • The MLD querier and MLD message suppression can be enabled in the same VLAN to implement the MLD snooping proxy function. After you configure the MLD snooping proxy function in a VLAN, do not configure the MLD querier or MLD message suppression in this VLAN. For detailed configurations of MLD querier and MLD message suppression, see (Optional) Configuring the MLD Snooping Querier and (Optional) Configuring Report Message Suppression.

  4. Run commit

    The configuration is committed.
