Overview of IP Multicast over VXLAN

Purpose

Currently, VXLAN networks are widely deployed in data centers. More and more service traffic, including IP multicast traffic, such as traffic from live broadcast, video conferences, and online games, needs to be transmitted over VXLAN networks. When the multicast data sent by a multicast source can be transmitted to multicast receivers through a VXLAN overlay network, IP multicast over VXLAN needs to be implemented. IP multicast over VXLAN supports the functions in the following table. You can deploy either as required.

Mode for Forwarding Encapsulated Data on the VXLAN Underlay Network

IPv4 Layer 3 multicast over VXLAN

If either the multicast source or receiver is on an external network, or both the multicast source and receiver are on the VXLAN overlay network but in different BDs, this mode can be deployed to transmit Layer 3 multicast traffic on the VXLAN overlay network.

BUM multicast replication

IGMP snooping over VXLAN

If both the multicast source and receiver are on the VXLAN overlay network and in the same BD, this mode can be deployed to transmit Layer 2 multicast traffic on the VXLAN overlay network.

Ingress replication

Benefits

IP multicast over VXLAN offers the following benefits:

  • Reduces device performance pressure by reducing broadcast traffic on a VXLAN network.

  • Saves VXLAN network bandwidth.

  • Ensures the quality of IP multicast services deployed on a VXLAN network.
