Typical Multicast VPN Application

Multicast VPN isolates multicast services of different VPN instances in a single AS.

As shown in Figure 7-16, BGP/MPLS IP VPN runs in a single AS. PE1, PE2, and PE3 are configured with two VPN instances: VPNA and VPNB, and the same Share-Group address is set for the same VPN instance on the PEs. The VPN instances with the same Share-Group address join the same MD. After the Share-MDT is established, the protocol packets and data packets on the VPNs can be transmitted through their corresponding MTs.

To implement VPN multicast services in an AS, perform the following configurations:

  • Configure reachable routes and run MPLS on the public network. Run routing protocols between PEs and CEs, and establish BGP peer relationships between PEs to transmit VPN route information.
  • Enable IP multicast routing for the public network instance and VPN instances on PEs. Enable PIM-SM on all interfaces connecting to the public network and to VPN sites. If PIM-SM is enabled, select appropriate C-BSRs, C-RPs, or a static RP on the public network.
  • Enable IGMP on interfaces of PEs or CEs connected to sites where receivers exist.
  • Enable IP multicast routing on devices at each site. Enable PIM-SM on all interfaces of the devices. If PIM-SM is enabled, select appropriate C-BSRs, C-RPs, or a static RP at the site.
  • Configure different Share-Group addresses and Switch-Group-Pool ranges for VPNA and VPNB.
