Configuring an sFlow Sampling Mode

Configuring an sFlow Sampling Mode

Context

An sFlow agent provides two sampling modes:

  • Flow sampling: An sFlow agent samples packets in a direction on a specified interface based on a sampling rate, encapsulates the analysis result into sFlow packets, and then sends the sFlow packets to an sFlow collector.
  • Counter sampling: An sFlow agent periodically collects traffic statistics on the interfaces, processor, and memory. It encapsulates the collected information into sFlow packets, and sends the sFlow packets to an sFlow collector.

Flow sampling and counter sampling are independent of each other. Flow sampling obtains information about the flows of a specified service, whereas counter sampling obtains the traffic statistics on an interface. It is recommended that both sampling modes be configured.

Procedure

  • Configure flow sampling.
    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run interface interface-type interface-number

      The interface view is displayed.

    3. Run sflow sampling { collector { collector-id } &<1-2> | rate rate | length { length | head-only } | inbound | outbound } *

      Flow sampling is configured.

By default, flow sampling is not configured for interfaces.

The collector-id parameter and sampling direction must be specified; otherwise, the sFlow function does not take effect.

      NOTE:

When the assign forward enp sflow enable command is run to enable the CE-L36LQ-FD, CE-L36CQ-FD, CE-L36CQ-FG, CE-L36CQ-FD1, CE-L36CQ-SD, CE-L16CQ-FD, CE-L08CF-FG1, CE-L48XS-FG, CE-L48XS-FD1, CE-L24LQ-FD, or CE-L12CQ-FD card to perform sFlow sampling in enhanced mode, the maximum sFlow sampling rate is 65535. If you set the sampling rate to be larger than 65535, the switch automatically restores it to 65535.

    4. (Optional) Run sflow sampling local-host packet-type arp inbound [ rate rate ]

The switch is configured to sample the ARP packets sent to the CPU.

By default, the switch does not sample the ARP packets sent to the CPU.

After this command is executed, the switch samples the ARP packets sent to the CPU, encapsulates the ARP packets into sFlow packets, and sends the packets to the sFlow Collector. The sFlow Collector checks whether the network has a loop based on the sFlow packets. Different sFlow Collectors use different conditions. Look up the details in sFlow Collector's manual. For example, when an Agile Controller-DCN detects repeated ARP packets, it considers that a loop occurs.

      NOTE:

The CE12800E supports sampling for ARP packets sent to the CPU when configured with FD-X series cards.

    5. Run commit

      The configuration is committed.

  • Configure counter sampling.
    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run interface interface-type interface-number

      The interface view is displayed.

    3. Run sflow counter { collector { collector-id } &<1-2> | interval interval } *

      Counter sampling is configured.

By default, counter sampling is not configured on interfaces.

The collector-id parameter must be specified; otherwise, the sFlow function does not take effect.

      NOTE:

When the assign forward enp sflow enable command is run to enable the CE-L36LQ-FD, CE-L36CQ-FD, CE-L36CQ-FG, CE-L36CQ-FD1, CE-L36CQ-SD, CE-L16CQ-FD, CE-L08CF-FG1, CE-L48XS-FG, CE-L48XS-FD1, CE-L24LQ-FD, or CE-L12CQ-FD card to perform sFlow sampling in enhanced mode, the maximum sFlow sampling interval is 65535. If you set the sampling interval to be larger than 65535, the switch automatically restores it to 65535.

    4. Run commit

      The configuration is committed.
