Involved Network Elements

To provide the path detection function, the switch must work with an Agile Controller-DCN. The AC sends detection packets through OpenFlow Packet-out messages, and the switch sends detection packets through OpenFlow Packet-in messages.

Licensing Requirements

Path/connectivity detection is a basic feature of a switch and is not under license control.

Feature Limitations

Common limitations of path detection:

  • The Agile Controller (AC) in this document is the Agile Controller-DCN.
  • Path detection packets are not terminated by the switch, but are forwarded to the destination server or VM.
  • When path detection and multiple other services need to be configured together, the path detection service may fail to be delivered because of insufficient ACL resources. For services that can be configured together with path detection, see "Using VXLAN/EVPN with Other Services" in CloudEngine 12800, 12800E, 8800, 7800, 6800, and 5800 Series Switches ACL Technical Topics.

Limitations of IPv4 path detection:

  • The IPv4 path detection function can detect only the traffic path between any two devices when no tunnel is configured or a VXLAN tunnel is configured.

  • After the path detection function is enabled on a VXLAN decapsulation device, this function may affect common TCP/UDP/ICMP packets encapsulated in VXLAN packets. As a result, the server may receive duplicate TCP/UDP/ICMP packets.
  • In VXLAN, the following cards do not support path detection: CE-L48GT-EA, CE-L48GT-EC, CE-L48GS-EA, CE-L48GS-EC, CE-L24XS-BA, CE-L24XS-EA, CE-L48XS-BA, CE-L48XS-EA, and CE-L24LQ-EA.
  • In VXLAN where the card interoperability mode configured on the switch (except CE12800E) is non-enhanced mode, to use the path detection function, you must run the assign forward nvo3 service extend enable command to enable the NVO3 service extension function.
  • On the CE12800E configured with ED-E, EG-E, or EGA-E series cards, the ip path detection enable and ip path detection packet-format commands cannot be configured at the same time.
  • On the CE12800E configured with ED-E, EG-E, or EGA-E series cards, the IPv4 path detection function cannot identify ICMP detection packets. Therefore, you must select UDP or TCP when constructing detection packets.
  • If DSCP-based IPv4 path detection is enabled, plan the DSCP value that is used to identify detection packets, and ensure that the DSCP values are not used by any other service traffic.
Limitations of DSCP-based IPv6 path detection:
  • The DSCP-based IPv6 path detection function can detect only the traffic path between any two VMs on the IPv6 over IPv4 VXLAN network.
  • If DSCP-based IPv6 path detection is enabled, plan the DSCP value that is used to identify detection packets, and ensure that the DSCP values are not used by any other service traffic.
  • After the path detection function is enabled on a VXLAN decapsulation device, this function may affect common TCP/UDP/ICMP packets encapsulated in VXLAN packets. As a result, the server may receive duplicate TCP/UDP/ICMP packets.
  • In VXLAN, the following cards do not support path detection: CE-L48GT-EA, CE-L48GT-EC, CE-L48GS-EA, CE-L48GS-EC, CE-L24XS-BA, CE-L24XS-EA, CE-L48XS-BA, CE-L48XS-EA, and CE-L24LQ-EA.
  • Before configuring path detection in VXLAN on the switch except CE12800E, run the assign forward nvo3 service extend enable command to enable NVO3 service extension.
Limitations of IPv6 VXLAN path detection:
  • IPv6 VXLAN path detection can detect only traffic paths between VTEPs, not VMs.

  • Only CE-L48XS-FG, CE-L36CQ-FG, CE-L36CQ-FD1, CE-L36CQ-SD, CE-L48XS-FD1, CE-L08CF-FG1, and CE-L16CQ-FD cards support IPv6 VXLAN path detection.

Limitations of connectivity detection:

  • The ip path detection packet-format icmp src-ip src-ip-address dst-ip dst-ip-address and ip path detection packet-format arp [ src-mac src-mac-address ] [ dst-mac dst-mac-address ] src-ip src-ip-address dst-ip dst-ip-address commands cannot be used together.

  • On the CE12800E configured with ED-E, EG-E, or EGA-E series cards, the ip path detection enable and ip path detection packet-format commands cannot be configured at the same time.
  • Connectivity detection packets are not terminated by the switch, but are forwarded to the destination server or VM.
