Networking Requirements

As networks rapidly develop and applications become diversified, various value-added services are widely used. Link connectivity and network performance influence network quality.
  • For example, users will not sense any change in voice quality if the packet loss rate on voice links is lower than 5%. If the packet loss rate is higher than 10%, voice quality will deteriorate obviously.
  • The real-time services such as VoIP, online gaming, and online video require the delay be lower than 100 ms. Some delay-sensitive services even require that the delay be lower than 50 ms. Otherwise, user experience will degrade.

In Figure 15-17, users in enterprise branches and headquarters encounter erratic display and delay when using the video conference service. Network-level end-to-end packet loss measurement has been deployed, and packet loss on the transit network has been detected. To find out where packets are lost in a specified network range, hop-by-hop packet loss measurement must be configured for the specified service flow.

Configuration Roadmap

The configuration roadmap is as follows:
  1. Configure 1588v2 to implement time synchronization between switch 1, switch 2, and switch 3.

  2. Configure a service flow between video terminals as a target flow. It is a bidirectional symmetrical flow, so is divided into two unidirectional flows logically.

  3. Divide the link between switch 1 and switch 3 into two ACHs: ACH1 { TLP100, TLP200 } and ACH2 { TLP200, TLP310 }. Configure hop-by-hop packet loss measurement between switch 1 and switch 3 to locate faults on the transit network.

  4. Switch 1 functions as the MCP to collect packet loss statistics from DCP1, DCP2, and DCP3, summarizes and calculates the statistical data, and reports the statistical results to user terminals or NMS.

  5. Configure the alarm thresholds for packet loss and delay on switch 1 so that switch 1 can report packet loss information and link status to the NMS.

  6. Configure switch 1, switch 2, and switch 3 as DCPs to control and manage TLP 100, TLP 200, and TLP 310, collect packet loss statistics, and send the statistics to the MCP.

Data Plan

To complete the configuration, you need the following data:

  • Set the router ID of switch 1 to 1.1.1.1, router ID of switch 2 to 2.2.2.2, and router ID of switch 3 to 3.3.3.3. Configure the router IDs of the switches as DCP or MCP IDs.

  • Configure HMAC-SHA256 authentication on DCPs and MCP, and set the authentication password to Huawei_123.

  • Set the upper and lower alarm thresholds for packet loss to 10% and 5% respectively. Set the upper and lower alarm thresholds for bidirectional delay to 100 ms and 50 ms respectively.

  • Retain the default values of color bit, measurement interval, and UDP port number used for communication between DCPs and MCP.

NOTE:

Before configuring iPCA to implement hop-by-hop performance measurement, ensure that static routes or dynamic routing protocols have been configured to implement network connectivity between switch 1, switch 2, and switch 3.

Before performing iPCA hop-by-hop performance measurement, ensure that NTP or 1588v2 has been configured to implement clock synchronization between switch 1 and switch 2 (1588v2 is recommended. To measure unidirectional delay, 1588v2 is mandatory.) In this example, 1588v2 is configured.

  1. Configure 1588v2 to implement time synchronization between switch 1, switch 2, and switch 3.
