VPN Dual-Stack Access

Due to the shortage of IPv4 addresses, many carriers have started to deploy IPv6 networks. To facilitate the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 for existing BGP/MPLS IPv4 VPN services, carriers can use VPN dual-stack access.

VPN dual-stack allows a VPN to use both IPv4 and IPv6 address families. With this function, VPN interfaces that would otherwise support only a single type of protocol stack can support both IPv4 and IPv6 VPN access.

As shown in Figure 2-31, IPv4/IPv6 VPN dual-stack access allows VPN sites to support both IPv4 and IPv6 networks. In addition, IPv4 and IPv6 services are transmitted to a PE device through the same interface.
