Configuring IP FRR for VPN Routes

Configuring IP FRR for VPN Routes

If multiple CE devices in a VPN site connect to the same PE, you can configure IP FRR for VPN routes. IP FRR enables VPN traffic to be quickly switched to another PE-CE link when the next hop of the primary route is unreachable.

Pre-configuration Tasks

Before configuring IP FRR for VPN routes, complete the following tasks:

Context

IP FRR for VPN routes is used in scenarios where multiple CE devices connect to one PE device. As shown in Figure 2-38, the PE device forwards data to the site of VPN1 through Link_A. Link_B functions as a backup link. When the PE device detects that the route to CE1 is unreachable, it immediately switches traffic to Link_B and then performs other operations to trigger VPN route convergence. This minimizes the impact of the link failure on VPN services.

Configuration Procedure

The switch supports two methods of implementing FRR for VPN-IPv4 routes. Each method applies to a different networking environment and is configured separately:

  • IP FRR: used when different routing protocols are running between PE and CE devices.

  • BGP auto FRR: used when only BGP is running between PE and CE devices.

Use either method on the PE device according to your needs.

Procedure

  • Configuring IP FRR for VPN-IPv4 routes
    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run ip vpn-instance vpn-instance-name

The VPN instance view is displayed.

    3. Run ipv4-family

The VPN instance IPv4 address family view is displayed.

    4. Run ip frr

IP FRR is enabled for the VPN instance IPv4 address family.

    5. Run commit

      The configuration is committed.

  • Configuring BGP auto FRR for VPN routes
    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run bgp { as-number-plain | as-number-dot }

      The BGP view is displayed.

    3. Run ipv4-family vpn-instance vpn-instance-name

The BGP-VPN instance IPv4 address family view is displayed.

    4. Run auto-frr

BGP auto FRR is enabled for the BGP-VPN instance IPv4 address family.

    5. (Optional) Run route-select delay delay-value

The route selection delay is configured. After the primary path recovers, the device waits for the specified delay time before switching the traffic back to the primary path. This function ensures that the route is selected after routing tables of the devices on the primary path are stable, reducing packet loss caused by revert switching.

The delay time is an integer from 0 to 3600, in seconds. By default, the delay time is 0 seconds. That is, traffic is switched back to the primary path immediately after it recovers.

    6. Run commit

      The configuration is committed.

Verifying the Configuration

Run the display ip routing-table vpn-instance vpn-instance-name [ ipv4-address ] verbose command to check the backup next hops and backup outbound interfaces of VPNv4 routes in the routing table.
