Configuring a Device Not to Switch Multicast Traffic Back to the Original Link After ECMP Link Switchover

You can configure a device on a PIM SM network not to switch multicast traffic back to the original link after equal-cost multi-path routing (ECMP) link switchover. This will reduce packet loss or excess packets during link switchover.

Pre-configuration Tasks

Before configuring a device not to switch multicast traffic back to the original link after ECMP link switchover, complete the following tasks:

  • Configure a unicast routing protocol to ensure normal unicast routing on the network.
  • Enable PIM-SM.

Context

If a link on a network running ECMP becomes faulty, multicast traffic on the link will be switched to another ECMP link. After the fault is rectified, multicast traffic will be switched back to the original link. During the switchback, the number of packets may increase or packet loss may occur. To address this problem, you can configure a device not to switch multicast traffic back to the original ECMP link after this link recovers. The device will continue to transmit multicast traffic over the new link even if the original link has a higher priority, and will only switch traffic back if the new link fails.

Perform the following procedure on the device running PIM-SM:

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run pim [ vpn-instance vpn-instance-name ]

    The PIM view is displayed.

  3. Run rpf ecmp non-reverse enable

    The device is configured not to switch multicast traffic back to the original ECMP link after link switchover.

    By default, a device is configured to switch back multicast traffic to the original ECMP link after the fault on this link is rectified.

  4. Run commit

    The configuration is committed.
