Configuring PIM

Configuring PIM

Context

VPN PIM is used to establish VPN-based multicast routing tables on distributed VXLAN gateways for guiding forwarding of Layer 3 multicast data.

Perform the following steps on each of the PEs functioning as VXLAN gateways:

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run interface vbdif bd-id

The VBDIF interface view is displayed.

The VBDIF interface on the distributed VXLAN gateway has been bound to an L3VPN instance when VXLAN is deployed in distributed mode.

  3. Run pim sm

    PIM-SM is enabled.

  4. Run commit

    The configuration is committed.

Follow-up Procedure

Configure VPN PIM-related functions as needed. Perform PIM configurations in the VPN instance PIM view and interface configurations in the VBDIF interface view. For details, see "IPv4 PIM Configuration". The following configuration tasks are not supported:

  • Configure PIM-DM.

  • Configure BFD for IPv4 PIM.

  • Configure Bidirectional PIM.

When PIM-SM is configured in the ASM model, RPs can be deployed in either of the following modes:

  • Configure RPs for the VXLAN overlay network on VTEPs. You are advised to use loopback interface IP addresses as RP IP addresses and configure the same RP for all VTEPs.

    NOTE:

If VTEP IP addresses are set to the IP addresses of loopback interfaces, the loopback interface address used by the RP must be different from the VTEP IP addresses because the loopback interface used by the RP must be bound to a VPN instance.

  • Configure RPs on other nodes. In this case, all VTEPs must have private routes to RPs.
