Overview of OpenFlow


OpenFlow is the communication protocol between the control and forwarding planes in a Software Defined Networking (SDN) structure. OpenFlow provides standard, open interfaces to separate the control and forwarding planes. OpenFlow allows the controller to access and operate the forwarding plane of network devices. These network devices may be physical switches or virtual switches.


As server virtualization on data center networks becomes more common, the increasing number of virtual machines complicates network management and hinders service provisioning. To cope with these problems, network devices must be easy-to-operate, provide high extensibility, and support centralized control and management of forwarding behaviors. However, traditional network devices integrate the control and forwarding planes. Therefore, these devices have poor extensibility, and the period between technology updates is long. In addition, on traditional networks, it is difficult to control and manage devices or to quickly provision services on traditional networks. SDN separates the control and forwarding planes. As the communication channel in the SDN structure, OpenFlow enables communication between the control and forwarding planes, centrally controls and manages the forwarding service on the entire network, and also implements fast service provisioning.
