Overview of Intelligent Traffic Analysis

Overview of Intelligent Traffic Analysis

The intelligent traffic analysis function is a network traffic monitoring and analysis technology. It allows the switch to perform in-depth analysis on a specified service flow, obtain data about performance indicators such as the packet loss rate, delay (microsecond-level), and traffic volume of the service flow, and export the analysis result to the FabricInsight analyzer for further display and analysis. In this way, you can monitor the network running status and quickly locate network faults.

As the digital transformation of industries accelerates, a growing number of services and applications are being deployed in data centers. In addition, some problems may occur during service flow forwarding, such as TCP connection establishment failure and abnormal delay, bringing great challenges to data center O&M. Network traffic visualization is the key to implementing refined service management, fast sensing, and accurate fault location.

Currently, CE series switches work with the analyzer – FabricInsight – to initially implement the visualization solution for network-wide traffic. To be specific, traffic classifiers can be configured on a switch to match service packets and the switch can send a copy of matched packets to FabricInsight using the remote traffic mirroring capability. FabricInsight uses an algorithm to restore the path through which packets of a service flow are forwarded, implementing statistics collection, analysis, and fault location for traffic on the entire network. However, the following problems still exist:

  • In this solution, analysis and calculation of service flows mainly depend on the remote analyzer, which is heavily burdened and cannot analyze persistent TCP connections.
  • Faults are mainly located by marking service packets to collect network performance statistics. However, only statistics on the packet loss rate and delay are collected. The accurate round trip time (RTT) cannot be calculated, and other performance indicators such as the traffic volume cannot be analyzed.
  • The network traffic analysis function on the switch supports analysis based on sampled packets, and the sampling ratio is generally at least 2000:1. The analysis function based on this sampling mode can only be used for relatively rough traffic statistics collection. Accurate in-depth analysis based on each service flow cannot be implemented, and information such as packet loss and delay cannot be obtained.

The intelligent traffic analysis function can effectively solve the preceding problems. By performing in-depth analysis on specified service flows, the switch can obtain a series of high-precision performance indicators of service flows and export the analysis result to FabricInsight. This function enables O&M personnel to monitor network traffic and provides powerful support for network-wide traffic visualization.

  • Fault location for service flows

Enterprises can configure the intelligent traffic analysis function on related devices for important services, such as stock transactions and other financial services that are extremely sensitive to delay. By focusing on high-precision performance indicators of service traffic, the administrator can quickly and accurately locate faults when packet loss occurs or the delay is abnormal.

  • Network-wide traffic visualization

Based on the existing traffic visualization solution, the intelligent traffic analysis function can be used with the Layer 3 remote mirroring function. The administrator can configure the remote traffic mirroring function on the entire network to obtain the paths of service flows, and then configure the intelligent traffic analysis function based on the paths. In this way, the administrator can monitor traffic on the entire network in real time and obtain network traffic information such as the path where packets are lost, the path where a delay occurs, when the path is congested, and the path where service traffic is transmitted when multiple paths are available.
