Local HA Solution

This section describes the characteristics, mirroring (VIS) DR technologies, and principles of the High-Availability (HA) solution.

Solution Introduction

Based on Huawei VIS, local HA solution employs heterogeneous storage virtualization to shield the differences between storage arrays of different vendors and enable these storage arrays to form a large resource pool. The solution helps you implement multi-service and multi-level DR applications that are deployed and managed in a unified manner.

As increasing IT systems are constructed and user data is stored in a centralized manner, the amount of data grows sharply, posing demanding requirements for service continuity. IT systems in use face many problems:
  • The reliability of storage systems is low, resulting in high data loss risks.
  • A storage system will take a long time to recover from a failure. During the period, services are interrupted.
  • The existing devices have aged and expansion cannot protect the investment.
To enhance the IT system availability to address the preceding problems, Huawei launched HA DR Solution to enhance software and hardware reliability of customers' production systems.
Solution Description
The HA solution applies storage mirrors to the production service system, improving the availability of storage systems, data, networks, servers, and even the entire IT system of applications.
  • Data is written to both the local storage system and the mirrored storage system for full data redundancy. If either storage system fails, the data read/write paths fail over to ensure service continuity.
  • The local HA system can be deployed in the local equipment room or an adjacent building.
  • The HA solution supports heterogeneous storage arrays, fully utilizing existing devices, thereby protecting the investment.

Mirroring (VIS) DR is supported.

Deployment Mode

One eReplication Server is deployed on a server at the production center to provide DR management for production and DR resources. The network between the eReplication Server and production center must be properly connected.

Mirroring (VIS) DR

The mirroring (VIS) DR uses the mirroring function provided by Huawei VIS6600T to construct the active-active dual-array architecture: the two arrays in mutual-mirrored mode concurrently provide services for upper-layer applications.

Figure 1-24 shows the network of mirroring (VIS) DR.

DR Management
eReplication provides the following functions:
  • Automatically identify the mappings between VIS volumes, mirror relationship, and array LUNs by detecting applications on hosts and application storage.
  • Automatically aware VMs running virtualization infrastructure (FusionManager or FusionCompute) being added.
  • Monitor mirror protection status during daily O&M.
  • Automatically protect service data based on preset DR policies, by executing protected groups.

Mirroring (VIS) DR Principles

The local HA solution uses the mirroring technologies supported by the virtual intelligent storage (VIS) devices deployed at the local production data center (DC) to provide local DR protection.

The VIS6600T mirroring technologies implement mirroring across heterogeneous disk arrays. Figure 1-25 shows the mirroring principles.

  1. The host writes new data to the VIS6600T.
  2. The VIS6600T simultaneously writes data to the production volume and the mirrored volume.
  3. After data is successfully written to the production volume and the mirrored volume, the two volumes each return a write success response to the VIS6600T.
  4. The VIS6600T returns a write completion response to the host.

In mirroring mode, data on the mirror volume is the same as that on the production volume. Compared with other backup technologies, the mirroring technologies provide optimal data protection.

The mirroring (VIS) technologies support fiber channel (FC) links only.
