What Can I Do When a Planned VM Migration or Clearing of VMware VMs Fails at the Step for Uninstalling a Datastore

What Can I Do When a Planned VM Migration or Clearing of VMware VMs Fails at the Step for Uninstalling a Datastore

Symptom

When VMware VMs are being migrated or cleared as planned, uninstalling datastores fails. However, when I view the substep details, the system displays information indicating that the datastore is successfully uninstalled but SCSI LUNs fail to be separated.

Under such situations, when you log in to the vCenter Client where the datastore resides and view the history events of host operations, the Detach failed for device failure record exists and the systems displays a message indicating that LUNs to be separated exceeds the upper limit, as shown in Figure 8-6.

Figure 8-6  Symptom

Possible Causes

A record is generated each time LUNs are separated and cannot be automatically cleared. When the number of such records exceeds 512, subsequent LUN separations fail.

Fault Diagnosis

Based on vCenter Client' instructions, manually clear partial LUN separation records to keep the number of such records smaller than 512.

Procedure

  1. On the CLI, log in to the faulty ESXi host.
  2. Run the esxcli storage core device detached list command and view separated LUNs in off state.

The following information shows a command output:

    Device UID State
    -------------------------------- -----
    naa.60022a11000b65c62c09cbb000000016 off
    naa.60022a11000b65c62c09cbd00000001b off
    naa.60022a11000b65c62c09cc060000001c off
    NOTE:

In the example shown in the preceding figure, you can manually clear records 60022a11000b65c62c09cbb000000016, 60022a11000b65c62c09cbd00000001b, and 60022a11000b65c62c09cc060000001c.

  3. Run the esxcli storage core device detached remove -d naa.60022a11000b65c62c09cbb000000016 command to delete record naa.60022a11000b65c62c09cbb000000016.

    NOTE:

60022a11000b65c62c09cbb000000016 is used as an example. Perform this operation based on site requirements.
