What Can I Do If "Operation failed" Is Displayed When I Start or Shut Down a VM During the Execution of the VMware VM Recovery Plan

Symptom

When the VMware VM recovery plan is executed, starting or shutting down a VM fails, and execution details contains Operation failed.

Possible Causes

The datastore where the VMs reside runs out of space for VMs to create swap files. As a result, VMs fail to be started or shut down.

Procedure

  1. When recovering VMs to an ESXi host, use vCenter Client to log in to vCenter and specify the path for saving VM swap files to the storage with sufficient space, without affecting other VMs.

For details, see the VMware documentation.

  2. If you want to recover a VM to an ESXi host cluster, ensure that VM swap files and the VM reside under the same directory to prevent the adverse impact on VM vMotion performance. Adjust the space of the datastore where the VM resides to ensure that the VM can correctly create swap files.
