Installing Signal Cables for a KVM

A KVM is used by maintenance personnel to monitor device status. All storage nodes must be connected to the KVM for routine management and maintenance.

Prerequisites

  • All components have been correctly installed in the cabinet.
  • All required tools have been prepared, including cable ties, diagonal pliers, and ESD gloves or an ESD wrist strap.

Context

A KVM provides eight VGA ports to connect to storage nodes, which correspond to the eight VGA ports on the KVM in a from-small-to-large sequential order.

A fully-populated cabinet accommodates eight 5288 V5 36-slot nodes or TaiShan 5280 V2 36-slot nodes. Figure 10-97 shows how VGA ports on the KVM are distributed to those nodes.

A fully-populated cabinet accommodates 12 TaiShan 2280 V2 12-slot nodes, TaiShan 2280 V2 25-slot nodes, 2288H V5 12-slot nodes, 2288H V5 25-slot nodes, 2288H V5 nodes with 12 NVMe SSDs, or 2288H V5 nodes with 24 NVMe SSDs. Figure 10-98 shows how VGA ports on the KVM are distributed to those nodes.

For a cabinet that is not fully populated, observe the preceding distribution rule and reserve empty VGA ports.

Procedure

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
  2. Determine KVM port numbers and signal cable connection modes.

    • In a cabinet accommodating 5288 V5 36-slot nodes or TaiShan 5280 V2 36-slot nodes, eight VGA ports on the KVM are distributed as shown in Figure 10-97.
    • In a cabinet accommodating TaiShan 2280 V2 12-slot nodes, TaiShan 2280 V2 25-slot nodes, 2288H V5 12-slot nodes, 2288H V5 25-slot nodes, 2288H V5 nodes with 12 NVMe SSDs, or 2288H V5 nodes with 24 NVMe SSDs, eight VGA ports on the KVM are distributed as shown in Figure 10-98.
      • VGA ports PC1 to PC6 on the KVM are connected to nodes 1 to 6 in sequence.
      • VGA port PC7 is connected to node 7. Nodes 8 and 9 are not connected to the KVM. If node 7 does not need to be connected to the KVM, VGA port PC7 is available to node 8 or 9.
      • VGA port PC8 is connected to node 10. Nodes 11 and 12 are not connected to the KVM. If node 10 does not need to be connected to the KVM, VGA port PC8 is available to node 11 or 12.

  3. Connect an HDB male connector marked KVM to a VGA port (PC1 to PC8) on the KVM.
  4. Insert the USB connector of the KVM cable to the USB port on a storage node and insert the HDB male connector marked PC to the VGA port on the storage node.

    An empty VGA port must be filled with a KVM cable. The other end of the KVM cable is bound to the mounting bar of the cabinet.

    A 5288 V5 36-slot node is used as an example to illustrate how to connect the KVM to storage nodes, as shown in Figure 10-99.

  5. Lay out the KVM cable along the mounting bar on the left rear of the cabinet neatly, use a cable tie to bind it, and use diagonal pliers to trim off the excess of the cable tie.
