Logging In to a Switch

Logging In to a Switch

Prerequisites

  • A console cable is available.
  • HyperTerminal software, such as PuTTY, has been installed on the PC.

You can use the built-in HyperTerminal software (such as the HyperTerminal of Windows 2000) on the PC. If no built-in HyperTerminal software is available, use the third-party HyperTerminal software. For details, see the software user guide or online help.

Procedure

  1. Insert the DB9 connector of the console cable to the 9-pin serial port on the PC, and insert the RJ45 connector to the CONSOLE port of the switch.

The location of the CONSOLE port varies depending on the specific switch model, as shown in Figure 5-2.

  2. Open the HyperTerminal on the PC, establish a connection, and set the connected port and communication parameters. The following uses PuTTY as an example, as shown in Figure 5-3.

Because multiple ports may exist on the PC, select the one that connects to the console cable.

Set Bits per second to 9600, Data bits to 8, Stop bits to 1, Parity to None, and Flow control to None.

Press CTRL+C to abort Zero Touch Provisioning in 10 seconds...

  4. When the following information is displayed, set the login password as prompted (the information displayed in the following figure is for reference only):

Continue to set it? [Y/N]: y
Set a password and keep it safe! Otherwise you will not be able to login via the console.
Please configure the login password (8-16)
