Troubleshooting Log Output Failures

Troubleshooting Log Output Failures

Introduction

This document describes two common symptoms and troubleshooting procedures for log output failures.

Failed to Output Log Information

Fault Description

Log information cannot be displayed in the log buffer, log file, console, user terminal, or log host.

Common Causes

  • The log severity is too low, so log information cannot be output to the corresponding channel.

  • The log display or console display function is disabled, so log information cannot be output to the console or user terminal.

Troubleshooting Procedure

  • The log severity is too low, so log information cannot be output to the corresponding channel.

    1. Run the display info-center channel command to check the channel configuration of the device information center and find the minimum severity of logs that can be output by the corresponding channel.
      <HUAWEI> display info-center channel 4
      channel number:4, channel name:logbuffer
ModuID Name Enable LogLevel Enable TrapLevel Enable DebugLevel
ffffffff default Y warning N debugging N debugging
Table 1-1 Description of some fields in the display info-center channel command output

      Item

      Description

      channel number

Channel number in the range of 0 to 9.

      channel name

      Channel name.

      ModuID

Module ID. The default value is ffffffff.

      Name

Module name. The default value is default.

      Enable

Whether logs are allowed to pass through a specified channel:
      • Y: Logs are allowed to pass through a specified channel.

      • N: Logs are not allowed to pass through a specified channel.

      LogLevel

Minimum severity of output logs. The following log severities are listed in descending order of importance:
      • emergencies

      • alert

      • critical

      • error

      • warning

      • notification

      • informational

      • debugging

    2. If the current log severity is lower than the minimum log severity allowed by the channel, run the info-center log-severity command to increase the log severity; alternatively, run the info-center source command to change the rule for outputting log information to the channel and reduce the minimum severity of logs that can be output to the channel.
  • The log display or console display function is disabled, so log information cannot be output to the console or user terminal.

    1. Run the terminal monitor command to enable the terminal to display the information sent by the information center.

    2. Run the terminal logging command to enable the terminal to display log information.

A Delay or an Incorrect Timestamp Occurs During Log Output

Fault Description

  • A delay or loss occurs during log output.

  • The timestamp in the log information is inconsistent with the device time.

Common Causes

  • If too many debugging functions are enabled, the processing speed of the log component is affected. As a result, the log information is delayed or lost when being output.

  • The time zone has been configured on the device, but the standard UTC time without the time zone is used for log output. Therefore, the timestamp in the log is different from the device time.

Troubleshooting Procedure

  • A delay or loss occurs during log output.

    1. When the log storage space of the device is insufficient, the system deletes the earliest compressed log file to ensure that the latest log file can be recorded. Therefore, the delay or loss of output log information will not be caused by the insufficient log storage space of the device. Check whether the processing speed of the log component is affected because too many debugging functions are enabled.

Run the display debugging all-session command to check whether debugging of all command lines is enabled.

      <HUAWEI> system-view
      [~HUAWEI] diagnose
      [~HUAWEI-diagnose] display debugging all-session
Session [84]: ACL_DEBUG_ACL6_CONFIG debugging switch is on
Session [84]: ARP packet debugging switch is on
    2. Disable the debugging. If the fault persists, collect alarms, logs, and configurations and contact technical support.

  • The timestamp in the log information is inconsistent with the device time.

    1. If the time difference is not caused by the delay, run the display clock command to check the current date and time of the system.

      <HUAWEI> display clock
      2010-01-01 06:02:51+08:00
      Friday
      Time Zone(BJ) : UTC+08:00
      Daylight saving time :
      Name : BJ
      Repeat mode : one-year
      Start year : 2011
      End year : 2011
      Start time : 2011-08-01 06:00:00
      End time : 2011-10-01 06:00:00
      Saving Time : 01:00:00

In the command output, Time Zone indicates the time zone configured on the device.

    2. Run the display current-configuration command to check the currently effective configuration parameters. Check whether the without-timezone parameter is specified in the info-center timestamp log command to prevent the logs that are output to the terminal, log file, log buffer, and log host from carrying the time zone and daylight saving time (DST) information.

If so, run the undo info-center timestamp log command to restore the default timestamp format of output log information.
