Configuring SIM Card Security Management
Context
A personal identification number (PIN) identifies the user of a subscriber identity module (SIM), user service identity module (USIM), or user identity module (UIM) card and prevents unauthorized access to these cards. A PIN is a decimal integer of 4 to 8 digits. The initial PIN is set by a specific carrier.
If a user enters incorrect PINs for three consecutive times, the SIM, USIM, or UIM card is locked for security purposes. To unlock the card, the user needs to enter the PIN unblocking key (PUK). If the user enters incorrect PUKs for ten consecutive times, the SIM, USIM, or UIM card is locked permanently. In this case, the user needs to replace the card.
Procedure
- Authenticate a PIN.
To prevent unauthorized users from using the SIM, USIM, or UIM card, enable PIN authentication on the 5G modem. After PIN authentication is enabled, the device authenticates the PIN each time the SIM, USIM, or UIM card is started. The 5G modem can be used only after a correct PIN is entered to unlock the SIM, USIM, or UIM card.
- Change a PIN.
Periodically changing a PIN improves the security of a SIM, USIM, or UIM card.
- Use a PUK to unlock a SIM, USIM, or UIM card
