Overview of Ethernet Interfaces
Ethernet interfaces, including Ethernet electrical and optical interfaces, are used in local area networks (LANs).
The following types of Ethernet interfaces are provided on a device to meet network requirements:
- Layer 2 Ethernet interface: a physical interface that works at the data link layer and cannot be assigned an IP address. It is used to forward packets at Layer 2 and can be added to a VLAN to forward packets at Layer 3 through a VLANIF interface.
- Layer 3 Ethernet interface: a physical interface that works at the network layer and can be assigned an IP address. It can be used to forward packets at Layer 3.
Layer 2 Ethernet interface
Layer 2 Ethernet interfaces include FE electrical interfaces, GE electrical interfaces, optical interfaces, 10GE optical interfaces, and GE optical interfaces.
Table 2-1 lists attributes of Layer 2 Ethernet interfaces.

Layer 3 Ethernet interface
Layer 3 Ethernet interfaces include FE electrical interfaces, GE electrical interfaces, FE optical interfaces, GE optical interfaces, and 10GE optical interfaces.
By default, an Ethernet interface works in auto-negotiation mode, which is recommended. If the negotiation succeeds, the two interfaces work at the same duplex mode and speed. The settings of the SPEED and DUPLEX parameters and auto-negotiation mode must be the same at the local and peer ends. Otherwise, negotiation may fail. The interface auto-negotiation mode, duplex mode and speed support depend on the device.
Combo interfaces do not support to insert copper transceiver module.
Table Attributes of Layer 3 Ethernet interfaces lists attributes of Layer 3 Ethernet interfaces.
