Summary of IPv6 PIM Configuration Tasks
After IPv6 PIM is configured, multicast data can be routed and forwarded on an IPv6 network. IPv6 PIM includes multiple modes that apply to different scenarios. Table 5-1 lists IPv6 PIM configuration tasks.
Task | Description |
---|---|
IPv6 PIM-DM uses the ASM model to provide multicast services. The configuration is simple, but multicast data is periodically broadcast. IPv6 PIM-DM applies to the small LAN where members are densely distributed. |

IPv6 PIM-SM uses the ASM and SSM models to provide multicast services. In the ASM model, a multicast distribution tree (MDT) is set up by receivers actively joining the multicast group. IPv6 PIM-SM needs to maintain an RP, set up an RPT, and register with a multicast source. The ASM model applies to the large network where members are widely distributed. In the SSM model, IPv6 PIM-SM sets up an SPT between a multicast source and members and does not need to maintain an RP, set up an RPT, or register with the multicast source. The SSM model applies to the network where users know the multicast source location and directly order multicast data from a specified multicast source. |
