IP Multicast Basics
This chapter describes fundamentals of IP multicast that you need to learn before configuring IP multicast features.
IP multicast enables point-to-multipoint data transmission. A multicast source sends only one copy of data, which is copied and distributed on network nodes as far from the multicast source as possible. The multicast data is sent only to the receivers that have requested the data.
In this chapter, the word "switch" or the switch icon shown in figures refer to routers with Layer 2 multicast functions enabled.
