Powering On Devices
After all devices are installed, power on them and check that they are working correctly.
- In 6.0.0 and later versions, after the first power-on and initialization, the controller enclosures support remote power-on in later operations. For the first power-on and initialization, you must use the power button on the controller enclosures.
- To remotely power on multiple controller enclosures of a storage system, ensure that you have connected the controller enclosures according to the diagrams in Connection Between Controller Enclosures (Supporting Remote Power-On, Applicable to 6.0.0 and Later).
- For details on remote power-on, see "Powering on the Storage System (Remotely on the CLI)" in the administrator guide corresponding to your product model.
Prerequisites
All devices have been properly installed and device installation has been checked.
Context
- Before powering on a storage system, ensure that all expansion cables have been properly connected. If expansion cable connections are adjusted after a storage system is powered on, the storage system may malfunction.
- To avoid system data loss, do not remove or insert optical fibers, network cables, coffer disks, or interface modules when the storage system is powering on.
- When powering on a storage system, do not wear an ESD wrist strap to avoid electric shock.
The correct power-on sequence is as follows:
- Turn on the external power switches corresponding to all the devices.
- Press the power button on each controller enclosure.
- Power on switches (if any switch is deployed but not powered on).
- Power on application servers.
Procedure
- Switch on the external power supply (PDB or PDU), as shown in Figure 8-1.
- If a PDB is used, check the labels on the power cables and match the power cables with the power switches on the cabinet PDB.
For example, if the label on an AC power cable connected to a controller enclosure is "PowerBox Output B_8", it indicates that the power cable of the controller enclosure corresponds to power switch SW8 on module Output B. You can turn on that power switch to power on the controller enclosure.
- Switch on the external power supply for the devices in a cabinet in the following sequence: disk enclosure, controller enclosure, switch (on a SAN), and application server.
- If a PDB is used, check the labels on the power cables and match the power cables with the power switches on the cabinet PDB.
- Press the power button on each controller enclosure.
- You only need to press the power button once. If the power indicator of the controller enclosure is blinking green, the storage system is being started. Do not hold down the power button. If the power button is held for 5 seconds, the system is powered off.
- The power-on process takes 15 to 30 minutes.
- After the controller enclosure is powered on, disk enclosures connected to it will be automatically powered on.
- After the system is powered on, the disk initialization process automatically starts. The time required for the process depends on the quantity of the disks to be initialized.
Follow-up Procedure
The following figures and indicator descriptions help you determine whether the system is powered on correctly. For more indicator information, see "Indicator Description" in the product description corresponding to your product model.
Figure 8-2, Figure 8-3, and Figure 8-4 show the indicator status after the system is powered on.
Verify that the system has been correctly powered on and is working correctly:
If data switches are configured, check the status of the indicators on the data switches too.
- The power indicators on controllers, controller enclosures, and disk enclosures are steady green.
- The alarm indicators on controllers, controller enclosures, and disk enclosures are off.
- The running indicators on disks are steady green, and the alarm/location indicators are off.
If any alarm indicator is on, the device is faulty and you must rectify the fault. For details on how to rectify faults, see the troubleshooting guide. If a power indicator is not steady green, contact Huawei technical support engineers.
