Overview
This section describes the background, definition, and benefits of HyperClone.
Background
OceanStor Dorado series storage systems support lossless snapshots for data backup and analysis. However, snapshots share data with their source LUNs and do not achieve physical isolation of data. If the source LUNs suffer physical damage, snapshot services will be affected. To isolate data physically, Huawei offers the HyperClone feature.
Definition
HyperClone creates a full copy of the source LUN's data on a target LUN at a specified point in time (synchronization start time). The target LUN can be read and written immediately, and you do not need to wait for the copy process to complete. If the source LUN suffers data corruption, you can restore the data from the target LUN.
Benefits
HyperClone provides the following benefits:
- Support for snapshots
You can create clone pairs using snapshots, snapshot duplicates, and snapshot consistency groups.
- Zero backup window
Data backup using HyperClone does not need to suspend services.
- Immediate availability, no impact on the source LUN
After the synchronization is started, hosts can read and write the target LUN immediately without affecting the data on the source LUN.
- Support for full and incremental synchronization
During initial synchronization, the source LUN's data is fully synchronized to the target LUN. After that, only differential data is synchronized.
- Support for reverse synchronization
HyperClone not only synchronizes data from the source LUN to the target LUN, but can also reversely synchronize data from the target LUN to the source LUN.
- Support for consistency groups
A consistency group manages multiple clone pairs centrally to ensure that the copies of all members in the group are at a consistent point in time.
