Planning of Device Layout in a Bay (Applicable to 18000 Series)
Before laying out devices in a bay or expanding your storage capacity, familiarize yourself with the layout principles.
Background Information
- To ensure performance and data security of a storage system, you are advised to divide all SAS disk enclosures in a fully loaded bay into 16 expansion loops and all smart disk enclosures into 8 expansion loops. For the loop IDs and disk enclosure IDs of system bay 0 and system bay 1, see 2 U SAS Disk Enclosures Only, 4 U SAS Disk Enclosures Only, 2 U and 4 U SAS Disk Enclosures Intermixed (Up to Two Disk Enclosures in a Loop), and Smart Disk Enclosures Only.
- Table 7-5 describes the meanings of the abbreviations in the figures.

- CTE represents a controller enclosure. CTE0 indicates a controller enclosure in system bay 0; CTE1 indicates a controller enclosure in system bay 1.
- DAE represents a disk enclosure. DAEXXX indicates a disk enclosure number, where:
- The first X indicates the ID of the system bay to which the disk enclosure is connected.
- The second X indicates the ID of the loop to which the disk enclosure belongs.
- The third X indicates the cascading depth, that is, the number of disk enclosures in a loop.
For details about disk enclosure naming rules, see Loop ID and Disk Enclosure ID Naming Rules.
- Figure 7-6 shows the colors that represent different cascading depths of the disk enclosure in the figures.
- Description of loop IDs:All disk enclosures in a fully loaded bay are divided into eight cascading loops. The loops are numbered from 0 to 7 from bottom to top.
- Upper half: 1 U to 16 U, that is, loop 0 to loop 3
- Lower half: 17 U to 42 U, that is, loop 4 to loop 7
2 U SAS Disk Enclosures Only
If only 2 U SAS disk enclosures are configured, a maximum of sixteen 2 U SAS disk enclosures are required for a bay in full configuration.
- If the number of 2 U SAS disk enclosures is a multiple of 16, the configuration of 2 U SAS disk enclosures and expansion ports is shown in Figure 7-7.
The green, orange, yellow, and pink areas indicate the level-1, level-2, level-3, and level-4 disk enclosures respectively (that is, first, second, third, and fourth disk enclosures in a loop). On the right of a disk enclosure ID is the port ID of the controller enclosure connecting to the disk enclosure. For example, DAE000 indicates the level-1 disk enclosure connecting to port P0 in slot 6 of controller enclosure 0, and DAE001 indicates the level-2 disk enclosure connecting to port P0 in slot 6 of controller enclosure 0.
- If the number of 2 U disk enclosures is not a multiple of 16:
- Each loop contains up to two disk enclosures.
Disk bays and system bays use the same disk enclosure layout. The following uses system bay 0 as an example.
Allocate disk enclosures to loops 0 to 7 in the sequence of DAE000 > DAE010 >...> DAE060 > DAE070 > DAE001 > DAE011 >...> DAE061 > DAE071.
- Each loop contains up to four disk enclosures.
Install level-1 and level-2 disk enclosures in the same bay, and install level-3 and level-4 disk enclosures in the same bay.
- Allocate level-1 and level-2 disk enclosures to loops 0 to 7 in system bay 0 in the sequence of DAE000 > DAE010 >...> DAE060 > DAE070 > DAE001 > DAE011 >...> DAE061 > DAE071.
- Allocate level-3 and level-4 disk enclosures to loops 0 to 7 in disk bay 0_2 in the sequence of DAE002 > DAE012 >...> DAE062 > DAE072 > DAE003 > DAE013 >...> DAE063 > DAE073.
- Each loop contains up to two disk enclosures.
4 U SAS Disk Enclosures Only
If only 4 U SAS disk enclosures are configured, a maximum of eight 4 U SAS disk enclosures are required for a bay in full configuration.
- If the number of 4 U disk enclosures is a multiple of 8, the configuration of 4 U SAS disk enclosures and expansion ports is shown in Figure 7-8.
The green and orange areas indicate level-1 and level-2 disk enclosures respectively (that is, first and second disk enclosures in a loop).
- If the number of 4 U disk enclosures is not a multiple of 8:
- Each loop contains up to two disk enclosures.
Disk bays and system bays use the same disk enclosure layout. The following uses system bay 0 as an example.
Allocate disk enclosures to loops 0 to 7 in the sequence of DAE000 > DAE010 >...> DAE060 > DAE070.
- Each loop contains up to four disk enclosures.
Install level-1 disk enclosures in the same bay and level-2 disk enclosures in the same bay. Disk bays and system bays use the same disk enclosure layout. The following uses system bay 0 and disk bay 0_2 as an example.
- Allocate level-1 disk enclosures to loops 0 to 7 in system bay 0 in the sequence of DAE000 > DAE010 >...> DAE060 > DAE070.
- Allocate level-2 disk enclosures to loops 0 to 7 in disk bay 0_2 in the sequence of DAE001 > DAE011 >...> DAE061 > DAE071.
- Each loop contains up to two disk enclosures.
2 U and 4 U SAS Disk Enclosures Intermixed (Up to Two Disk Enclosures in a Loop)
When the maximum number of cascaded disk enclosures in a loop is two, a loop contains up to two 2 U SAS disk enclosures or one 4 U SAS disk enclosure.
A bay can be fully loaded with sixteen 2 U disk enclosures or eight 4 U disk enclosures. When 2 U and 4 U disk enclosures are installed in one bay, lay out 2 U disk enclosures in the lower half of the bay and 4 U disk enclosures in the upper half.
The green, orange, and yellow areas indicate the level-1 and level-2 disk enclosures respectively (that is, the first and second disk enclosures in a loop).
- If the number of 2 U disk enclosures is a multiple of 16 and that of 4 U disk enclosures is a multiple of 8:

The number of remaining 2 U disk enclosures is H (remainder of the total number of 2 U disk enclosures divided by 16) and that of remaining 4 U disk enclosures is K (remainder of the total number of 4 U disk enclosures divided by 8). Disk bays and system bays use the same disk enclosure layout. The following uses system bay 0 and disk bay 0_0 as an example.
- If H is greater than 8 and K is greater than 1, two bays are required. Install 2 U disk enclosures in a system bay preferentially.

For the lower half of system bay 0, allocate one disk enclosure to each of loops 0 to 3 in the sequence of DAE000 > DAE010 > DAE020 > DAE030 > DAE001 > DAE011 > DAE021 > DAE031.
- Method for laying out 4 U disk enclosures:
- For the upper half of system bay 0, allocate one disk enclosure to each of loops 4 to 7 in the sequence of DAE040 > DAE050 > DAE060 > DAE070.
- For disk bay 0_0, follow the layout principle of installing 4 U disk enclosures only.
- Method for laying out 2 U disk enclosures:

For example, DAE000 indicates the level-1 disk enclosure connecting to port P0 in slot 6 of controller enclosure 0, and DAE001 indicates the level-2 disk enclosure connecting to port P0 in slot 6 of controller enclosure 0.
- If the number of 2 U disk enclosures is a multiple of 32 and that of 4 U disk enclosures is a multiple of 16:

Smart Disk Enclosures Only
If only smart disk enclosures are configured, a maximum of eight smart disk enclosures are required for a bay in full configuration. Each smart disk enclosure occupies 4 U. For example, if DAE000 is installed in 3 U and 4 U, then keep 1 U and 2 U idle.
- If the number of smart disk enclosures is a multiple of 8, the configuration of smart disk enclosures and expansion ports is shown in Figure 7-11.

2 U SAS and Smart NVMe Disk Enclosures Intermixed
If smart NVMe disk enclosures and 2 U SAS disk enclosures are intermixed, a loop supports up to one smart NVMe disk enclosure or four 2 U SAS disk enclosures.
- Smart NVMe disk enclosures can be installed only in system bays. A system bay supports up to four smart NVMe disk enclosures and they must be installed in the upper half of the system bay.
4 U SAS and Smart NVMe Disk Enclosures Intermixed

- Smart NVMe disk enclosures can be installed only in system bays. A system bay supports up to four smart NVMe disk enclosures and they must be installed in the upper half of the system bay. Each smart NVMe disk enclosure occupies 4 U space. For example, if disk enclosure DAE008 is installed in the 19 U to 20 U position, the 17 U to 18 U position must be idle.

The green and orange areas indicate the level-1 and level-2 disk enclosures respectively (that is, first and second disk enclosures in a loop).

- 4 U SAS disk enclosures are installed in disk bays 0 and 2. A disk bay supports up to four 4 U SAS disk enclosures and they must be installed in the upper half of the disk bay.
- If 2 U SAS disk enclosures are installed in a system bay, the system bay supports up to eight 2 U SAS disk enclosures and they must be installed in the lower half of the system bay. If 2 U SAS and 4 U SAS disk enclosures are installed in the same disk bay, the disk bay supports up to eight 2 U SAS disk enclosures and they must be installed in the lower half of the disk bay. If a disk bay houses only 2 U SAS disk enclosures, it supports up to sixteen 2 U SAS disk enclosures.
Figure 7-14 shows the layout of fully loaded system bay 0 and disk bays 0 to 3.
The green, orange, yellow, and pink areas indicate the level-1, level-2, level-3, and level-4 disk enclosures respectively (that is, first, second, third, and fourth disk enclosures in a loop).
