Creating a SmartErase Task
This operation enables you to create a SmartErase task to destruct data on a LUN. The destructed data cannot be recovered, ensuring data security.
Context
The system provides the following two methods for data destruction:
- DoD: The system overwrites a LUN in accordance with US Department of Defense (DoD) Standards to destruct source data.
- Custom: The system overwrites a LUN according to the customized overwrite times.
Precautions
- SmartErase cannot be used to destruct data on the following LUNs:
- LUNs created on SSDs
- Thin LUNs
Data in thin LUNs cannot be fully destructed because of capacity-on-write and space release. SmartErase is used to destruct data of thick LUNs created on HDDs.
- LUNs that have been added to a SmartCache partition
- Abnormal LUNs
- LUNs in LUN groups
- LUNs for which value-added services are configured
- LUNs whose migration properties have not been set to No relocation.
- Before using a LUN that has been destructed by SmartErase, format the LUN and then configure services.
Procedure
- Log in to DeviceManager.
- Choose
Provisioning >
LUN.
- Select a LUN whose data you want to destruct and choose More > Create SmartErase Task.
The Create SmartErase Task dialog box is displayed.
- Configure the parameters for LUN data destruction.Table 7-12 describes the parameters for LUN data destruction.Table 7-12 Parameters for LUN data destruction
Parameter
Description
Setting
DoD
The system overwrites data according to the DoD standard.
[Example]
DoD
Custom
The system overwrites the selected LUN according to the customized overwrite times.
NOTE:If this parameter is selected, Overwrite Times is valid.
[Example]
Custom
Overwrite Times
Customizes data overwrite times. More overwrite times indicate more thorough destruction.
[Value range]
3 to 99

- Confirm the LUN data destruction.
If you want to stop the ongoing data destruction, right-click the LUN and choose Delete SmartErase Task.
- Click OK.
The Warning dialog box is displayed.
- Confirm the information in the dialog box and select I have read and understand the consequences associated with performing this operation.
- Click OK.
The Success dialog box is displayed, indicating that the operation succeeded.
