Preparing and Installing Auxiliary Tools and Software
Before expanding the capacity of storage systems, prepare and install auxiliary tools and software to ensure smooth capacity expansion.
Table 4-1 lists the auxiliary tools required for capacity expansion.
Tool |
Used To |
---|---|
Serial cable |
Log in to the serial port of a storage system. |
(Optional) USB-to-serial adapter cable |
Connect to a storage system. If the maintenance terminal is a laptop without a serial port, use the USB-to-serial adapter cable to connect to the storage system. |
Cable tie |
Bundle new cables. |
Label |
Mark the position of a cable before it is removed, preventing the cable from being inserted into a wrong slot during capacity expansion. |
Marker |
Mark locations and scales. |
Diagonal pliers |
Install ground cables. |
Phillips screwdriver (M3 to M6) |
Fasten small screws and bolts. |
(Optional) Flat-head screwdriver (M3 to M6) |
Replace the floating nut mounting bar, install and remove floating nuts. |
Floating nut mounting bar |
Install and remove floating nuts. |
Installation template |
Determine installation positions. |
ESD clothes |
Protect from electrostatic discharge. |
ESD gloves |
Protect from electrostatic discharge. |
ESD wrist strap |
Protect from electrostatic discharge. |
Multimeter |
Test the insulation of a cabinet, connectivity of a cable, and electric performance specifications of a device, such as voltage, current, and resistance. |
Fiber extractor |
A fiber extractor helps you to replace LC fibers, pluggable optical modules, and unshielded network cables. |
For 18000 series storage systems, adjustable guide rails are preinstalled in the bays before delivery. Four bags of screws, which are used to secure these adjustable guide rails for capacity expansion, are placed in the lower left corner and lower right corner (two bags on each side) of each bay. Use these screws as needed during the installation and put back the remaining screws for future capacity expansion.
Table 4-2 lists the software required for capacity expansion.
Software |

Obtain From |
---|---|---|
SSH tool |
Log in to a storage system and transfer files between the maintenance terminal and the storage system. |
This document uses the PuTTY software as an example. You can download PuTTY from chiark website. Use the latest version of PuTTY; otherwise you may fail to log in to the storage system. |
